Mission: The mission of the hannah project is to boost the academic proficiency and college attendance of marin city and other low income youth of color by working in partnership to promote a community culture that encourages achievement and equips families and students with knowledge, skills, and strategies to fulfill their dreams and ambitions.
Programs: College access and retention programs: homework after dark, college 2. 0, college conversations, and dreamkeeper scholarship program: huge barriers - unfamiliarity with the college admissions process, the rigors of college work, failure to take the recommended core college curriculum ( 4 years of english, 3 years of math, 3 years of history, 2 years of science, foreign language, etc. ) low grade point average, lack of family support and financial resources - often stand between low-income students of color and their college dreams. Even when academics are not a factor, first generation college-bound students and their families are intimidated by the maze of requirements to enter college. Homework after dark, college conversations and the hannah dream keeper scholarships work together to help prepare students academically and socially for college, shepherd students and their families through the process, and provide a needed financial bridge, career mentoring, and academic advising for students throughout their college experience. Specifically hannah's homework after dark is a partnership with dominican college students, teachers from local schools and community volunteers to provide homework assistance and subject matter tutorials to raise the level of achievement and academic proficiency among marin city middle and high school students; hannah's college 2. 0 incorporates a variety of college prep related activities including college tours, financial aid workshops, advising, sat prep and personal statement assistance geared to the needs of our students and their parents; hannah's college conversations program facilitates peer-to-peer conversations between our high school seniors and hannah's college scholarship recipients about college life e. G. Roommates, dating, budgeting and time management; and hannah's dream keeper scholarship program provides a needed financial bridge, career mentoring, and academic advising for students throughout their college experience. An application-based scholarship for low-income youth of color, the dream keeper program requires that recipients act as ambassadors for higher education in the community by offering at least 10 hours of community service on behalf of the hannah project. Dream keeper scholars are eligible for scholarships for up to three years and are required to maintain a 3. 0 average. The average scholarship amount is $2,000 per year and the hannah project supports about 15 students per year. hannah cdf freedom school a blend of educational, cultural and social development opportunities for children in grades 3-8, the hannah cdf freedom school(r) is an exhilarating six week summer experience. Focused on language arts and reading, the program is a serious educational intervention that strives to help children and young adults improve academic skills while developing an understanding and appreciation of their own history and culture in order to develop the resilience they need to address and overcome academic, social, cultural, and emotional challenges. Since 2010, the hannah project has provided a successful full-day summer school experience through its partnership with the children's defense fund, a national advocacy organization. Serving more than 300 elementary and middle school aged children during this period, the six-week literacy and project based learning program has had documented results in increasing reading proficiency, motivation and the self-esteem of scholars. Freedom school not only promotes literacy and a love of learning among students, but offers visual and performance arts, sports, field trips, and stem related activities to a diverse community of students in the afternoons. Independent testing has also confirmed that freedom schools not only stave off summer reading loss, but children at hannah freedom school actually gained a cumulative month reading gain. A little known outcome of freedom school has been its impact on our servant leader interns (slis) - the college students that function as instructors. Of the 22 young people that have served as slis, nine of them are actively pursuing careers as teachers or educational administrators - creating a much needed pipe line of minority educational professionals. Freedom schools create an affirmative, positive, culturally rich learning environment that sets high expectations for engagement. Parents are deeply involved as site volunteers and participate in weekly parent education focused workshops. Steeped in the cultural traditions of black and brown people, the cdf freedom schools progam instills a sense of pride and opportunity in the hearts and minds of all who participate - children, servant leaders, volunteers and the broader community.
