Mission: Fund literacy and sufficiency projects in Sign Language for Deaf youth in Ensenada, Mexico.
Results: 100% of donations to Hands That Talk are destined to pay six teachers who can communicate with our 60 students in fluent Mexican Sign Language. We have 39 deaf students enrolled in either our elementary, middle or high-school certificated programs, and 21 deaf students learning to read and write Spanish and doing sports in the after-school program. Household incomes of these families are very low, and can´t pay the full tuition. In the city there is not ONE public school that gives deaf students access to the oral communication. Interpreters or teachers knowledgeable of Sign Language are not supplied.
Target demographics: pay for the education in Sign Language for Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing youth
Direct beneficiaries per year: the civil association pay 85 per cent of the teachers' pay.
Geographic areas served: Ensenada, Baja California
