Programs: Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County (Habitat CFC) is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International and serves Coastal Fairfield County. It is an autonomous 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. It is governed locally, raises funds locally and builds locally. Habitat CFC's programs build decent and affordable houses for ownership by low-income families. Partner families qualify by showing a demonstrated need for improved housing, a willingness to partner with Habitat CFC (by committing to work 500 hours of "sweat equity" by helping to build their own house and houses of other habitat partner families, or working at the ReStore), and the ability to repay an affordable interest-free mortgage. Habitat CFC provides extensive pre- and post-sale social and support services to its homeowners. With our help, Habitat CFC homeowners achieve the strength, stability, and independence they need to build a better future for themselves and their families. Habitat CFC was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. We also offer volunteer opportunities to individuals, small groups, schools, the faith community, civic groups and corporations. We had over 18K volunteers from the beginning of 2022 to mid-year 2023. With the help of volunteers, we can build our houses within a reasonable timeframe. Habitat CFC operates a not-for-profit retail store, Stratford Habitat ReStore, which sells discounted used furniture and building supplies. This social enterprise contributes funding to Habitat CFC’s primary mission of building decent and affordable houses while also benefiting the community both fiscally and environmentally. Low-cost home improvement items are offered to the public while keeping usable appliances and building materials out of our landfills.
