Mission: To work in partnership with god's people in need to create a strong sense of community while working towards the goal of eliminating substandard housing in the black hills of south dakota. The organization focuses on homeownership needs in the community, while engaging the community in the issues of affordable homeownership. The organization seeks to put god's love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope, with a vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Programs: Creating, financing, and preserving homeownership: black hills area habitat for humanity (bhahfh) creates affordable home ownership by matching sites to families and then engages the family and community volunteers to build or rehab the home using donated labor, materials and contributed funds. Families are selected based on their ability to afford a modest mortgage, their willingness to partner in the program, and their ineligibility for other financing. 50-75 people volunteer weekly, with an estimated 12,000 volunteer hours per year. The completed home is then sold to the partnering family at its market value by placing a 0% interest mortgage on the home. Long-term mortgage financing is the key component that makes bhahfh homes affordable. Homes are sold to local low-income families, the majority of which earn less than 50% of the area median income. Monthly mortgage payments collected by bhahfh are added to the donation resources used for building additional homes for families in need. More than 300 people have been placed in homes since 1990. Bhahfh partners with corporate partners, the city of rapid city, and the sd housing development authority to accomplish its mission. In addition, the "a brush with kindness" (abwk) program provides painting, landscaping, and repairs to qualifying low- income homeowners struggling to maintain their homes. Priority is given to the elderly, veterans, those with disabilities and single parents. Abwk served 11 local homeowners in 2017.
restore: bhahfh operates two restore locations that accept donated building materials and home items for resale to the general public. This initiative allows homeowners in the community to purchase items at reduced prices and keep their homes affordable. In addition, unsalable items are recycled to help save the environment.
