Mission: Habitat for humanity of indiana, inc. (habitat) is an ecumenical christian housing ministry whose mission is "seeking to put god's love into action, habitat for humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. " habitat in supports the 60 habitat affiliates in the state by providing training, advocacy, resource development and disaster recovery services for the collective. The agency was incorporated in the state of indiana in 2000 and has been providing important statewide support ever since. In 2018, habitat in will partner with its affiliates, habitat international and habitat for humanity of st. Joseph county to host the jimmy and rosalyn carter work project. This national event will bring publicity, funding, celebrities and support to the 60 habitat affiliates in the state. In addition to this event, habitat indiana will continue to provide statewide grant funding in the following programs.
Programs: Americorps: habitat operates a program through a grant from the state of indiana's serve indiana program that provides full time staff to nonprofit organizations. This grant enables local habitat affiliates to hire americorps members that receive a stipend to serve full time as affiliate volunteer coordinators, construction staff, and family service providers. These critical staff help mobilize hundreds of volunteers annually throughout the state.
home investment fund project: habitat has a partnership with ihcda that has enabled them to set up a revolving loan fund for affiliates. The purpose of the project is to gain sustainability and attract private investment by providing affiliates seed money for home builds and rehab projects. Habitat will receive 1,050,000 from ihcda over 3 years that will be distributed to local affiliates. The distribution structure is 50% loan and 50% grant. The goal is that the loan repayments and private investment will provide steady funding for the mission well into the future. This will allow habitat to serve many more hoosier families. State conference: habitat in hosts a large annual state conference that serves as the primary vehicle for affiliate training. This educational event provides training in all aspects of affiliate operations including: construction, family selection, loan origination, servicing and nonprofit management. In addition to training, affiliates are able to network with key vendors and sponsors to help advance the work in their local markets.
