Programs: HABcore is one of a few agencies in Monmouth County that provides permanent and temporary affordable housing to low-income single adults. Incorporated in 1988, our name is derived from the initials of three homeless men who died in the vicinity of a Red Bank soup kitchen, where our first trustees worked as volunteers. The high rate of homelessness among their guests prompted them to establish HABcore. HABcore serves single adults with disabilities who are homeless or unable to care for themselves. 96% of our residents are people with mental illness, 40% of whom have a second diagnosis of chemical dependency. The primary goal of HABcore?s homes are to help our residents reach independent living when appropriate. Since 1988, our capacity has grown from five residents to eighty-eight, with two board and care facilities in Asbury Park & Red Bank and graduate, supportive, independent living facilities provided through HABcore owned properties in Red Bank and Keansburg and a HUD funded rent subsidy apartment program. We recently acquired a new facility in Beachwood, NJ that will house 5 people and plan to acquire 2 more houses by January 2009 that will have space for 11 people.
