Causes: Environment, Forest Conservation
Mission: Greenstand’s mission is to create a global, open-source marketplace to digitally track and compensate farmers for growing individually managed trees to support reforestation and alleviate poverty. Our goal is to create a self-sustaining restoration platform that connects local communities in developing countries with socially- and environmentally-concerned global citizens. Restoration efforts are informed, and adjusted, based on the results of basic ecological research. We aim to enable communities to become stewards of their land while providing opportunities for gainful employment.
Results: As of March 2021, Greenstand has verified over 725,000 trees worldwide, consisting of at least 47 unique species. We have tree growers across almost 50 nations across the Global South including 39 local or international tree planting organizations that we have partnered with.
Target demographics: compensate people for planting, growing, and tracking trees in their local communities
Direct beneficiaries per year: At the end of 2020, Greenstand had verified 600,000 growing trees. As of March 2021, we’ve already surpassed 725,000!
Geographic areas served: Africa, South and South East Asia, South America
Programs: The Treetracker app allows tree growers anywhere in the world to snap a geotagged photo of the tree they’re growing and upload it to the Greenstand verification system. Living trees that have not already been uploaded to our platform are verified, and tree growers receive monetary compensation in exchange.
