Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Community & Neighborhood Development, Economic Development, Environment, Land Resources Conservation, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection

Mission: Sustain the natural environment and enhance urban spaces through land conservation, community engagement, and education.

Results: We have educated nearly 4,000 students on the importance of the environment and directly contributed to the protection of more than 35,000 acres of land. We remain active members of the land acquisition team for the Edwards Aquifer Protection Project which has protected almost 100,000 acres in total. In addition, the GSA Community Gardens Network has fostered more than 40 community gardens in economically constrained neighborhoods throughout San Antonio since 2006. The median household income of garden communities funded by GSA (by census tract) is $31,577, with 26 percent of those garden communities being located in census tracts with median incomes under $25,000. This coupled with the fact that 85.1 percent of San Antonio residents earning less than $25,000 annually reported that they did not consume the daily recommended servings of fruits and vegetables in 2010, means that the Community Gardens Network has significant quality of life implications for the communities it works with.

Target demographics: the environment, the community, and individuals

Direct beneficiaries per year: 38 community garden groups

Geographic areas served: San Antonio and throughout south Texas

This group is fantastic. Creating spaces that help city people get in touch with nature, helping both children and adults. So many people are so attached to their electronic devices these days, GSA has great programs that give people an opportunity to explore the natural world around us. Get back to nature, support this wonderful group.
