Causes: Environment, Forest Conservation
Mission: Green forests work exists to re-establish healthy and productive forests on formerly mined lands in appalachia.
Programs: While fueling the energy needs of the nation, the practice of surface mining has severely impacted more than 1 million acres of the appalachian region's environment through the conversion of forestland into other land uses. Green forests work (gfw) has the ability and expertise to restore healthy, productive forests on previously mined lands to benefit the region, the nation, and the global environment. In 2017, gfw and our partners participated in 41 tree planting projects/events which resulted in the planting of more than 250,000 trees across more than 350 acres of surface mined lands. In 2017, gfw was able to educate more than 1,800 indivuduals about environmental problems and potential solutions. These projects provide both current and future economic returns for local economies through site preparation, tree plantings, and the development of a future supply of timber and non-timber forest products, while also providing the associated ecosystem services that forests supply (e. G clean air and water, wildlife habitat, sotrm mitigation, etc. )
