Mission: The mission of the greater kansas city community foundation is to improve the quality of life in greater kansas city by increasing charitable giving, educating and connecting donors to community needs they care about, and leading on critical community issues.
Programs: Connecting donors to the community needs they care about: the community foundation granted $263 million to over 5,000 public charities. Sixty-two percent of total grants were to public charities in the greater kansas city region. Grants to recipient sectors included, arts and culture 8%, education 12%, health medicines and science 17%, philanthropy 41%, human services 6%, other services 11%, and religion-related 5%.
increasing charitable giving: in 2014, 192 new donor funds were established bringing the total charitable funds to over 3,600 and $190 million was received in new contributions.
providing leadership on critical community issues: the community foundation continued its community leadership work as set forth in the time to get it right report, which provides a roadmap for the greater kansas city community and the region. Under the community foundation's leadership, leaders in the multi-state region addressed strategic initiatives that are targeted to improve the region's life sciences research capabilities, to support umkc's vision of becoming a first-rate urban university and to address the issues facing greater kansas city's urban elementary and secondary public schools.
