Programs: Established in 1956, hopital albert schweitzer haiti (has) is an integrated health care network serving the people of the lower artibonite valley and the surrounding rural, mountain communities. The has network of care includes a 131-bed hospital located in deschapelles, which serves as the primary reference hospital for 350,000 people living in a 610-square-mile area. The hospital offers advanced care in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology (ob/gyn), and pediatrics, as well as physical rehabilitation, laboratory diagnostics, prosthetics and orthotics, and a full pharmacy. The past year saw a continuation of the steadily rising demand for most services, in particular surgery, ob/gyn and pediatrics. On any given day, the hospital operated above targeted capacity, with a 4% increase in admissions compared to 2016 and an average occupancy rate of 139%. In 2017, has performed almost 3,000 surgical procedures, completed 1,600 deliveries, and conducted over 63,000 consultations in the hospital outpatient clinics. Running an operation of this size and scale in haiti requires a large staff of medical and non-medical employees - more than 525 people are employed in and around deschapelles. Has incorporates a collaborative approach to healthcare, working with the haitian government, non-governmental organizations, and international entities to fund work and deliver the best possible services to meet the community's ongoing healthcare needs.
integrated community services: the has integrated community services (sci) network comprises a widerange of activities including community health, water and sanitation, and agroforestry programs. Like the hospital, demands for community-based services continues to increase. The community health program consists of four community health centers, 70-80 mobile clinics, 225 health posts per month, and an average of 6,373 home visits per month by community health workers (chws). In 2017, a total of 157,321 consultations were conducted between four community health centers and mobile clinics - an 11% increase over 2016. Has' water and sanitation program drills wells and constructs latrines, rainwater catchment cisterns, and other water and sanitation structures throughout has area. The team drilled 10 new wells, repaired 14 non-functioning wells, constructed 3 latrine blocks, and reached over 17,000 community members with education about best practices in hygiene and sanitation. The agroforestray program trained local community members in ecological reforestation techniques, and planted over 100,000 tree seedlings in 2017. Has provides a complete continuum of care for children and adults, ensuring equitable access for all people in its service area, regardless of their ability to pay.
