Mission: To empower individuals and families with employment barriers to achieve their fullest potential in the community through work services.
Programs: Goodwill of the southern alleghenies operates a donated goods retail system consisting of 10 stores, one attended donation center, and a 93,000 square foot distribution center serving a six and a half county region. Our retail system plays three critical mission roles which includes providing work and training opportunites for staff and clients, promoting sustainable recycling, and generating additional financial resources to help our residents gain, retain, and advance in employment. Supported by our well-trained staff and clients, our retail donated goods program receives a 95% or higher rating by our donors. Seen as a critical community asset, goodwill ranked #1 on enso's world value index for the second year in a row. Consistent with our founder dr. Edgar j helms vision, "its focus is more on prevention than cure. That what a job does. " in 2017, our retail program provided work and training opportunites to over 366 individuals.
the focus of all goodwill programs is employment and integration in the community. In 2017, goodwill greatly expanded its mission division through a partnership with the pa careerlink system. Serving as a lead partner for the regional one-stop employment centers and wioa title i provider in cambria, blair, and bedford counties, goodwill is able to leverage agency assets to benefit all job seeker and employer customers in the region. Named after our founder, our helms academy partners with penn highlands community college to offer free college classes to residents of the greater johnstown area. All tuition is supported by retail store proceeds. This programs seeks to help people "on ramp" to post-secondary educational opportunities. Serving over 5,800 individuals in 2017, goodwill also offers a wide range of programs supporting persons who are young adults, ex-offenders, or have disabilities. Services include assessment, career exploration, career counseling, adult literacy, work experience, mentoring, psychiatric rehabilitation, peer support, job development, placement, and follow-along.
