Causes: Human Service Organizations, Human Services
Mission: The gogebic-ontonagon community action agency's mission is to design and carry out programs to overcome causes of and instances of poverty, and to develop and administer programs intended to serve and/or improve the total community throughout the community action district, which comprises the michigan counties of gogebic and ontonagon, by utilizing the resources of federal, state, and local government agencies, private persons and organizations.
Programs: Childhood education - head start program provides a preschool program for the 3-5 year olds, 90% of whom come from families at or below the poverty level. We served 96 children in head start and 33 children in early head start during the year.
senior services - senior program provides nutritious meals to the elderly population, light housekeeping, personal care, respite care, and medical escort in a two county region in the upper peninsula of michigan. We served approximately 1,400 people in this program during the year.
housing, weatherization, & energy assistance - the housing and weatherization programs assists families purchasing a home and provides materials and instructions to self apply weatherization measures to reduce energy use and lower energy bills. During the year 258 people received housing assistance, 35 people received assistance from the weatherization and energy assistance programs and 362 people received fuel assistance.
food and community services - the food distribution program provides food and supportive services to families and senior citizens. This includes the distribution of foods provided by the united states department of agriculture. The organization distributed commodities to 975 recipients during the year.
