GYMI's evaluation data has shown that 100% students believe their leadership skill, team work skill, creative thinking skill and communication skill has improved through the program; and over 98% mentors believe this program has positively impacted their value system and professional development. Moreover, we offered three high schools associate mentors roles for free last year and they contributed to the program greatly and were absolutely adored by the students. Our surveys with principals and teachers show that many of our founding principles that emphasize leadership and creativity greatly align with the values of the school administrators, and there has been overall positive feedback from them as well.
Educational inequity is profoundly exhibited across societies and particularly in China rural schools. Education--particularly one that fosters innovative ideas—is essential for preparing for their futures. However, the parochial education offered in these schools, the dearth of resources and finances these institutions grapple with inadequately prepares students and puts them at great disadvantages. Particularly concerning is the lack of focus on developing skills related to leadership, creativity and teamwork and the exorbitant emphasis on rote learning. The lack of a holistic education has proven to produce drastic consequences, including the perpetuation of large socioeconomic gaps and poorer health longterm. GYMI is doing a great job tackling one of the hardest problem of our society. Good job!
GYMI offers an essential and unique approach through its advocacy for youth volunteers and provision of technology and arts curricula. Other groups train enthusiastic volunteers to become full-time teachers. This model only perpetuates the shortcomings of the current system while GYMI's model utilizes an innovative approach to provide new perspectives. Great job team!
I’m a volunteer with GYMI this summer and it's been a truly life-changing experience! I not only got to pay it forward, but also learned a lot about leadership skills and creative problem-solving. GYMI's staff and board members are all truly dedicated to this organization and it's been an honor to work with them! Will recommend this to anyone interested in education!
I've heard about GYMI by word of mouth, and after researching more about it feel like it is a well run organization with a great mission. I feel confident that it will help disadvantaged students in the foreseeable future. Go GYMI!
I've been with GYMI since its inception and I am so impressed by the dedication, creativity and intelligence of our volunteers, board members and the students we work with! Our volunteers have developed incredible leadership skills while dealing with the rewards and challenges of working in a rural setting and some of our volunteers have actually joined our board. Our students are always so willing to learn and full of potential--we always have a blast exchanging cultures and stories through the summer sessions and yearlong online mentorship relationship!
I've been on GYMI board for three years now and it's been a truly amazing experience! All the board members are super driven, compassionate, and talented. It is a community where everyone is a dreamer, and everyone is strongly identified with the organization culture. My personal favorite part of GYMI is our tradition- hot pot bonding during wintertime every year. It's such a wondering, inclusive community. Would strongly recommend anyone to join!
I've been working on this team for about 3 years now. They're a great group of very driven and innovative people. Our co-founders really try to push for new ideas to implement every session and are constantly reaching out to members for suggestions or changes. The team is really open to letting people work on what they're most passionate on, so you can really be exposed to different parts of the non-profit if you want or just settle in one place.
I volunteered for the this organization the past summer. It was one of the best experience that I have had. I was able to help kids from rural area in China to develop leadership skills and creative thinking skills. They did great. Hope to keep volunteering here!
I volunteered for GYMI the past summer in one of its partner schools in rural China. As a volunteer mentor, I worked with two underprivileged kids whose parents were away for most of the year working in big cities. They were very shy in the beginning of the summer camp but gradually built up their confidence through the two-week curriculum designed by GYMI, who gave them an opportunity to look beyond their small towns and dream big. I have been in contact with the two kids throughout the past year and witnessing their intellectual growth has been one of the most gratifying experience of my life.
