Causes: Arms Control & Peace, International, International, Foreign Affairs & National Security
Mission: The global security institute is dedicated to strengthening international cooperation and security based on the rule of law with a particular focus on nuclear arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament. Gsi was founded by senator alan cranston whose insight that nuclear weapons are impractical, unacceptably risky, and unworthy of civilization continues to inspire gsi's efforts to contribute to a safer world. Gsi has developed an exceptional team that includes former heads of state and government, distinguished diplomats, effective politicians, committed celebrities, religious leaders, nobel peace laureates, disarmament and legal experts, and concerned citizens.
Programs: The global security institute (gsi) is working to build an international consensus on necessary advances in nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. Gsi has identified an agenda wherein an overwhelming number of countries want to take practical steps that downgrade reliance on nuclear weapons, strengthen constraints on proliferation and unite efforts to achieve their universal elimination. Progress on this agenda and development of a consensus will be essential in ensuring the stability of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (npt). In addition, gsi's integrated programs provide the capacity to advance a practical agenda into significant capitals, including those of nuclear weapon states. An important group helping to make meaningful progress is comprised of middle power countries. These countries have good relations with the united states and other nuclear weapon states, and are capable of building nuclear programs but have restrained themselves based on the bargain of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (npt) to achieve the universal elimination of nuclear weapons. Helping to forge a strong coalition within this group of countries is the middle powers initiative (mpi), a program of gsi. Mpi's international steering committee works in cooperation with seven prominent non-governmental organizations specializing in nuclear disarmament issues including two nobel peace prize winning organizations - the international peace bureau and the international physicians for the prevention of nuclear war. Mpi has created the article vi forum to help countries that want to work together for nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation. The forum takes its name from the article of the npt that obliges signatories to negotiate in good faith the elimination of nuclear weapons. The forum is playing a unique role in creating the diplomatic space outside the traditional settings to enable like-minded states and prominent individuals to map out strategies to break the deadlock leading up to the 2010 review conference of the npt. Bipartisan security group (bsg)- the bipartisan security group (bsg) provides reliable information and analysis of global security issues to members of the us congress and their staff, with an emphasis on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Bsg consists of republican, democratic and independent experts with experience in diplomacy, law, intelligence and military affairs. The program is directed and chaired on capital hill by veteran diplomats, ambassador robert t. Grey, jr. And ambassador thomas graham, jr. Facilitated by the global security institute, bsg has convened a number of policy forums on capitol hill, including a session addressing "the limits of unilateralism," in cooperation with the us house of representatives bipartisan task force on non-proliferation, and united nations messengers of peace, dr. Jane goodall and michael douglas. Additionally, bsg, in cooperation with the henry l. Stimson center, hosted an event in congress to discuss the security implications of space weaponization. Keynote panelists included ambassador graham and michael krepon, president emeritus of the stimson center. Parliamentary network for nuclear disarmament (pnnd) - the parliamentary network for nuclear disarmament (pnnd) complements gsi's work with the us congress. Pnnd is a non-partisan forum for national and international parliamentarians to share resources and information, and develop cooperative strategies to secure nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. Pnnd has also built an international network of non-governmental organizations and individuals working with legislators in their own countries to advance nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Disarmament and peace education (dpe)- disarmament and peace education (dpe) works with prominent world leaders in a wide variety of fields, including nobel peace laureates, religious leaders, military experts, scientists, and environmentalists, providing them with essential information.
