Mission: GSN's mission is to identify, support, and encourage effective practices and programs that engage students in meaningful content and personal exchanges with people around the world to develop basic and advanced literacy and communication skills, create multi-cultural understanding, and prepares them for full participation as productive and effective citizens in an increasing global economy.
The roots of this mission goes back to 1984 with the inception of the grass-roots FrEdMail (Free Education e-Mail) Network... a pre-Internet effort to explore and validate the use of communications technologies to support and improve the development of basic and advanced literacy, communication and research skills among K-12 students.
In 1990 hundreds of these grassroots educators founded the FrEdMail Consortium, which in 1993 became the Global SchoolNet Foundation and the Global Schoolhouse. After more than fifteen years of pioneering research, development, and ongoing support for thousands of classroom teacher, the Global SchoolNet Foundation remains committed to supporting thousands of teachers worldwide who conduct engaging, student-centered, Internet- assisted project-based learning activities.
