Mission: We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
Programs: The organization served 1264 girls in 2016. Impacting communities in fourteen counties by hosting 87 girls on the run and heart and sole program sites in schools and community locations. Providing a physical activity based positive youth development program for 3rd through 8th grade girls, twenty lessons are delivered twice weekly by trained volunteer coaches. Each site completes a community impact project as part of the curriculum delivering value back to their respective communities. Futhermore, at the completion of each ten week course, the program participants join with a running buddy and complete a non-competitive 5k. The event hosts thousands of individual supporters of the participants as well as community partners in celebration of achieving such an empowering goal.
Girls on the Run is a lot more than a running program. The fabulous curriculum is full of lessons important to girls of all ages on subjects including body image and bullying. Girls on the Run and Girls on Track uses running to teach girls important life lessons about setting and working toward goals and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. The program runs twice a year in the fall and in the spring and each 12 week session ends with a 5K running event. All the teams from school sites throughout Western North Carolina all gather together to complete a 5K (3.1 miles) non-competitive road race. Nearly 600 girls, all reaching their goal one step at a time. We hope that this serves as a tool to rely on throughout life and that girls learn that by showing up and putting one foot in front of the other, you can do almost anything.
