Georgia Muslim Voter Project

Programs: Community building & eventsthroughout the year, our organizaqtion hosted or supported community events that brought together members of the muslim community and/or allies. Our largest event of the year was the atlanta womens march, of which we served as the fiscal sponsor. In addition to that, we partnered on events that focused on voter engagement and engaging underserved communities.

voter engagementour most important accomplishment is our voter engagement program. Once we get people registered to vote, the hardest part is getting them to the polls. We undertook traditional get-out-the-vote (gotv) activities including phone banking, door knocking, and additional targeted outreach through the local mosques and faith leaders. This year, we engaged voters for the special election for the 6th congressional district and the municipal elections in fall 2017.

voter educationthrough a series of voter 101 workshops, civic engagement trainings, and candidate forums, gamvp made voter education accessible to the muslim community. By bringing this education directly to the mosque, we engaged those that are usually left out of traditional engagement efforts. This year, we hosted voter education forums in partnership with other community-based organizations to educate voters about candidates in municipal elections.

voter registrationwith a combination of online and paper-based voter registration, we engaged new voters year round. We registered voters at mosques, ethnic restaurants, and stores frequented by our community members. This year, we supported voter registration efforts at naturalization ceremonies as people first became citizens, participating in over ten ceremonies. As a whole, we helped register hundreds of voters before the special election for the 6th congressional district and the municipal elections in fall 2017.
