Causes: Education, Student Services
Mission: Genspace is the worlds first community biology laba public facility where students and adults can learn, innovate, and explore using the latest scientific tools. Since 2009, we have promoted science literacy, entrepreneurship, and public conversation about the implications of biotechnology through hands-on research.
Programs: Lab membership program: we support innovation and exploration in the biosciences by providing a fully equipped molecular biology facility and professional mentorship to the public at a highly subsidized price per month ($100). We serve approximately 25-35 people per year with this program. Science education program: genspace provides mentorship and facilities, including lab supplies and services, that supplement stem/steam education programs for high school and college students. We support science competition teams and collaborate with schools and other nonprofits to deliver stem/steam programming to approximately 100 students per year. In addition, we run the biodesign challenge, a sub-program wherein design students partner with scientists to envision the future of biotechnology. Public outreach program: our outreach activities increase public literacy in the biosciences. This program includes adult classes. Public lectures and workshops, and participation in public events such as family science day at the annual meeting of the american association for the advancement of science. We serve several thousand people per year with these activities.
