Mission: Futurewise (formerly 1000 Friends of Washington) has been leading Washington’s fight to manage growth since the passage of the Growth Management Act in 1990. Futurewise is the main source of expertise and support for numerous citizens and groups working to manage growth in their own communities. Futurewise is Washington’s primary advocate for smart growth policies at the state level and for model development in urban areas. Through grassroots organizing, legal work, and advocacy, Futurewise has successfully saved hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland, educated hundreds of local activists throughout the state, and has advocated for better transportation options.

Programs: Futurewise is committed to preventing the loss of washington state's most valuable natural resource lands, ensuring clean healthy water, providing housing for all people at all income levels, and making it possible for people to walk, bike and take transit. Futurewise worked across the state to respond to these pressing economic, equity and environmental challenges through its research, engagement, planning & design, policy, advocacy and legal work.
