Mission: The Chilean-American Foundation's mission is to change the lives of children who are at social risk in Chile. We finance small projects in the poorest neighborhoods in community centers or at the children's schools, that provide meals, health services, or activities that help children develop their full potential by exploring talents, increasing their self-esteem, and teaching them how to cope with life's challenges. The Foundation's membership comprises Chilean people and friends from all nationalities.
Programs: Projects funded reach about 200-250 children per year and are carried out in Chile by legally established community organizations who work with volunteers in the projects. The programs are formulated by the community organizations taking into consideration their collected knowledge of the social and economic reality of the population they assist and, in particular, the social risk situations that the children face (drugs, alcohol, home violence, hunger, crowded homes, single parenting, school drop out, and teenage motherhood). Funded programs have the requirement to directly benefit the children in ways that it also involves a benefit to their family members. Ages of beneficiaries range from several months to 20 years old. Older participants are often encouraged to become the leaders in activities organized for younger ones. Our projects have been shown to have great impact on the lives of the children by them staying in school, avoiding drug use, and having a positive effect on their family through more involvement in their growth.
