Causes: Health, Specifically Named Diseases
Mission: The Fund for Public Health in New York, Inc. (FPHNY) is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of New Yorkers. Towards this aim, FPHNY implements programs to address pressing public health needs, develops private sector support for enhancing the health of New Yorkers, and educates New Yorkers about the role they can play in protecting their own health and the health of their families and communities.FPHNY works independently and in partnership with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. This partnership offers the private sector a unique and high-impact mechanism for collaborating with public sector agencies charged with the stewardship of public health in NYC. FPHNY builds public-private partnership and adds innovation, excellence, and efficiency to public sector response.
Programs: The Fund for Public Health in New York is a home for programs that improve the health of New Yorkers by developing new approaches, catalyzing program expansion, and adding efficiency to government service. FPHNY programs address issues such as emergency preparedness, maternal and child health, childhood obesity, animal welfare, sexually transmitted infections, access to healthy food choices and depression management. The range in topic and breath is vast some projects are multi-year while others are short-term. But all of our projects have contributed something valuable to public health priority issues in NYC.One example of how we collaborate with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is a pilot initiative to test a school-based STD education, screening and treatment program. The pilot project succeeded in testing the majority of students and treated 100% of students diagnosed with Chlamydia or Gonnorrhea . Based on the success of the pilot, the Department of Health expanded this program to an additional 44 schools in the 2006-2007 school year and will continue to expand the program to tens of thousands of teens in the coming years.
