Causes: Centers to Support the Independence of Specific Populations, Human Services
Mission: Friends together supports residents of northeast michigan who are living with cancer. Our mission is to be the difference for our friends during and after their cancer experience. Striving to build partnerships while providing program and services, friends together encourages prevention, wellness and support. Our primary services include support groups, direct assistance for medical travel, information and advocacy.
Programs: The distance and cost of travel to medical appointments is a barrier to treatment for many cancer patients in our rural service area. We provided assistance in the form of fuel gift cards to over 100 local residents. We also provided financial assistance to cover the cost of 150 nights of lodging for 34 area families. The total cash value of these two services was about 30,000. We continue to operate a van to assist cancer patients in our service area travel to appointments at our local cancer center. This year 33 area residents rode in our van, most for several weeks at a time. We invested 15,200 in operation and maintenance expenses on this vehicle. Through the generosity of a donor, we were able to purchase a second vehicle to provide added services for our friends dealing with cancer. This year we opened a part time office in presque isle county, started a new cancer support group in alcona county, and initiated a men's health awareness campaign with the help of a grant from the miu/men's health foundation. We also recruited several volunteers to serve as aides at the alpena cancer center to support both patients and the nursing staff. This program was initiated in cooperation with the volunteer program at alpena regional medical center at the request of the cancer center staff.
