Mission: Friends of the teton river (ftr) uses sound science and collaboration to protect and improve clean water, healthy streams and a thriving fishery in teton valley, idaho and wyoming. Ftr implements community-driven restoration projects and education programs to benefit water resources in the teton watershed.
Programs: Stream restoration: ftr's stream restoration program focuses on restoring & revegetating damaged stream channels & riparian areas, improving fish passage, & improving flow in tributary streams in the teton watershed. Restoration work reduces flooding risk, restores functional floodplains, improves stream flows & water quality, & creates healthy habitat for fish, with a focus on threatened yellowstone cutthroat trout. In 2017, ftr completed stream channel, fish habitat, and floodplain restoration work on teton creek; secured funding for irrigation infrastructure improvements and conservation farming incentives; and completed plans for future stream restoration work.
research & monitoring: ftr conducts rigorous research & monitoring on trout populations, water quality, & water quantity. This research is designed to measure restoration program successes, track trends & identify threats to watershed health, & prioritize future restoration work. In 2017, ftr assisted with a trout population assessment on the teton river; analyzed fisheries data and developed a decision support model for native trout; installed a stream flow gauge for the upper teton river; conducted stream flow, water quality and temperature monitoring and offered well- testing for the community.
education & outreach: ftr's watershed education & outreach program provides opportunities for community members of all ages to learn & make informed decisions about water. In 2017, ftr continued to engage k-12 students in classroom and field science programs; implemented the teton county waterwise initiative for drinking water protection; and coordinated peer-to-peer education for agricultural producers.
