Causes: Community & Neighborhood Development, Economic Development
Mission: The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation will enhance and expand the Elizabeth River Trail as a recreational, social, and educational destination that improves environmental awareness, neighborhood connectivity, and innovative economic development in Norfolk. The ERT Foundation provides planning, fundraising, events and marketing to activate and enhance the Elizabeth River Trail. We generate public support to create a world-class asset that is a source of local pride.
Results: In 2018, The Elizabeth River Trail Foundation was able to acquire new digital counters to better track trail usage, plant an award-winning meadow and edible orchard and partner with Nauticus on Norfolk's first 3,000-square foot pier mural, The Magenta Line, commemorating the zero-mile marker of the ERT. We also completed months of successful public hearings and on-trail beta tests for our new signage system. In 2019, we will produce and install our beautiful family of wayfinding signs to help ERT users better navigate the trail's entire 10.5-mile length and develop our first trailhead at Plum Point Park!
