After looking at many different dogs we chose one that was being handled by Friends of Rock Mount Animals The first question on the inquiry was what was the name of the dog that we were interested in. After making the inquiry I submitted a application to adopt rhe dog. On every email that we exchanged it was headed with the caption of thank you for inquiring with the dogs name posted, so they knew who we were interested in. They never posted the dog as pending adoption. After three days of being investigated and checked out which I understand and appreciate, I sent a email thanking them for the approval and asking about when we could pick up the dog that my wife had fell in love with. We were told that during our pending process the dog was adopted by someone else. I should of known that when they refused to put the dog in a pending state that something was up. I have been involded in this business practice in business before it is known as “Bait and Switch”. I would be very cautious about dealing with this organization . They bait you with the picture of a cute pet only to find out that you have wasted your time and they try to put you on another pet. If I would wanted something else I would have chosen it to start with My wifes emotions were played with and I do not appreciate it.
I have worked with Laura and FORA volunteers on all aspects of the organization, fostering, doing home visits, and also adopting 2 dogs from them. Laura runs a tight ship and does not allow her dogs to go to just anyone. Her goal is to give them a great lifetime home. The adoption fees are more than fair since they come spayed/neutered and utd on shots. Adoptions may not always happen as fast as some people may like but they are always in the best interest of the dog.
We inquired about a dog through a national website that linked with this organization. This organization does not post adoption fees. I ask 3 times before it was revealed that it was $300. When I asked questions I got evasive answers. I felt like they were not forthcoming when I requested to speak with the current caretaker of the dog. They quoted their not specific dog policy, said they would ask but in the end did not follow through citing some owners would not do so. why are they linked with a data base that links specific dogs and breeds? After asking the same questions multiple times and a flat refusal to allow us to have the dog visit in order to make sure of a good fit for our family we pulled out. Too many red flags for us. Good intentions but very poor communication. We also questioned the cost for this specific Dog based on the posting and got a rather snarky reply. I'm not altogether sure how legitimate they are. Most rescue agency get services donated or rendered at at reduced cost. Things just did not add up. I would start clear.
I adopted a dog from Friends of Rocky Mount in 2009. They would not release the dog until an on-site visitation was completed and submitted for approval, which I totally appreciated. Laura and her staff run a wonderful organization - they were very responsive to all of my questions and appeared to be very caring people. The puppy arrived spayed, neutered, with all appropriate shots, and additionally had been microchipped; all of which had been included in the fee for adoption. After searching locally for a puppy I was unable to find one that fit my requirements - and was extremely pleased that I found this exceptional organization.
I have adopted several dogs of various breeds from Friends of Rocky Mount Animals. This is a wonderful rescue and they do great work for homeless animals. Bless them for all they do.
I contacted this group as they are working with a "rescue" here in NJ the rescue in NJ claims to be a non profit but there are no public records to indicate this is true. I asked them for the mailing address on file for this "non profit rescue" (which is public information if they are in fact a non-profit) and Laura refuses to give that information out or any information that should be made available to the public it appears Laura is trying to help this rescue hide , I have a very bad feeling about this group, and who they give these dogs to by not being forthcoming and transparent I get the feeling that Laura is trying to hide something or cover something up
The dog we adopted was sick when we picked him up and were told it must just be carsick. Emergency vet diagnosed deadly parvo virus. Laura would not return my phone calls and rudely emailed "the contract states...we can't guarantee anything nor can we promise anything it also says the dogs go as is...adoption fee is not refundable" I would STRONGLY advise against adopting any animal through this agency.
