Causes: Environment, Land Resources Conservation
Mission: The friends of los penasquitos canyon preserve is a volunteer organization which has been protecting the preserve for more than 30 years. The friends assist the city and county rangers through activities such as leading interpretive walks, performing wildlife and other scientific studies, removing invasive and exotic weeds and replanting with natives, installing kiosks, and coordinating scout projects. Past scout projects have included building small bridges, installing interpretive signs, building and installing owl boxes, and restoring trails. Recently included is a project to clean weeds around lake hodges. Projects also include pacific highlands ranch management. The board meets bi-monthly and welcomes new volunteers in any capacity.
Programs: Habitat restoration and trail maintenance: organized volunteer efforts and provided materials for maintenance of area, eradication of invasive weeds, planting of native vegetation. Conducted surveys of endangered plants and maintained historic ranch house.
