Mission: The Mission of the Friends of Hapitok is to ensure the continued operation of Camp Hapitok that provides children from San Luis Obispo County who have speech, language and hearing disabilities the opportunity to improve communication skills in a positive and exciting camp environment through a unique one-on-one bond with teen volunteers. Camp Hapitok is commited to: increase children’s educational and social success by improving communication skills in a natural environment. Increase children’s self-confidence and independence through the bond of friendship with a special teenager. Inspire teens by providing opportunities to experience the joy of making a difference in the life of a child. Inspire individuals to pursue careers in regular and special education.
Results: Children who attend Hapitok often improve more during the four weeks of camp than during an entire school year of speech/language therapy. Our data consistently shows that: 100% of campers improve at least one target speech/language IEP goal 50% of campers meet at least one IEP goal 40% of campers surpass at least one IEP goal 100% accelerate his/her progress in therapy the following school year 5% no longer require speech/language therapy in school Parents and teachers report renewed self-esteem, better social skills, and academic improvement.
Target demographics: Children ages 6-11 with speech, language, and hearing disorders
Geographic areas served: San Luis Obispo County at Rancho El Chorro Outdoor School
Programs: Campers form a unique bond with a trained teen volunteer who works one-on-one with the child to improve his/her speech or language using natural language opportunities. Campers are able to interact with like peers in a positive manner. Other services include daily therapy, staff led activities such as PE and swimming, arts and crafts, nature walks, and academic support. All services, meals, room and board are provided at no cost to the child's family.
