Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: FOUR PAWS is an international animal welfare organization that has, for more than two decades, consistently and successfully focused on one goal: to help animals who have been abused for entertainment, economic, scientific or other reasons. FOUR PAWS strives for improvements in animal welfare through sustainable campaigns, our sanctuaries and projects around the world.

Results: FOUR PAWS International is an animal protection charity founded in 1988 in Austria in response to the cruelty of fur farms and industrial egg production. During the organization’s early years, FOUR PAWS was successful in closing down numerous fur farms, stopping two airlines transporting wild birds and generating awareness about the suffering of bears at tourist attractions.Within a decade, it was clear that European laws and directives have major impact on animal welfare across Europe and efforts began to expand. Currently, FOUR PAWS has offices in 13 countries including Austria, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Switzerland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam. Additionally, FOUR PAWS runs 5 bear sanctuaries across Europe; an orphan academy for baby orangutans in Borneo, Indonesia; a Stray Animal Care (SAC) unit provided spay/neutering and medical services; LIONSROCK in South Africa (one of the largest big cat sanctuaries in the world); and a Disaster Relief team and many other projects, campaigns and partnerships. The FOUR PAWS Big Cat Sanctuary LIONSROCK in South Africa provides permanent care to over 100 rescued big cats. Construction of much needed new enclosures has continued at the Felida Big Cat Centre in Netherlands from where we have begun transporting animals to LIONSROCK as their permanent home. Most recently, animals rescued from war- torn zoos in Aleppo and Gaza were brought to this animal refuge. Save the Saddest Bears. For many years, FOUR PAWS has been on the forefront in improving the way wild animals in Europe are kept. An important part of this goal is the legal ban of private ownership of bears which now has been implemented by many countries. Around the globe, bears are often kept in substandard conditions and enforcement of wildlife ownership laws are often lacking. FOUR PAWS owns and manages 5 bear sanctuaries across Europe located in Austria, Kosovo, Switzerland, Bulgaria, and Germany and 1 sanctuary in Vietnam housing 83 bears and offer natural environments and specialized care to offer confiscated, rescued and surrendered bears. Bears in Asia. The bear bile industry is a growing black market. Illegally captured bears in Asia are kept for bile extraction, a terrifying and painful process that includes piercing a bear's abdomen wall and gallbladder. FOUR PAWS has launched a project to save bile bears in Vietnam. It is estimated that 1,800 to 1,900 bears are still living in appallingly cruel conditions. We are providing on-the-ground support for rescued bears and developing a comprehensive strategy to rescue the last of the Vietnamese bile bears. To aide these missions, FOUR PAWS partners with the Vietnamese government and is in the process of creating a sanctuary for 100 rescued bears. Most recently, we opened a bile bear sanctuary in Ninh Binh to provide life- long homes for former bile bears. The park is now home to several former bile bears.

Target demographics: animals who have been abused for entertainment, economic, scientific or other reasons

Geographic areas served: Boston is one of our 13 countries where we have offices including Austria, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Switzerland, South Africa, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.

Programs: Improvements in animal welfare through sustainable campaigns and projects. Our work is based on substantiated research and scientific expertise backed by intensive national and international lobbying efforts. We focus on animals that are directly under human influence: farm, wild and companion animals but also specifically bears, big cats, horses, primates and stray dogs and cats. FOUR PAWS aims to help animals in need directly and quickly through our work described above, through our sanctuaries and partner project and from our disaster relief unit.

I came across this fantastic organization a couple months ago and was instantly amazed with some of the success stories they had posted in recent months. They are the voice that these neglected animals need and without them, the number of these terrible situation would continue to grow. They are providing awareness to this issues that otherwise would go unnoticed by the general public. I will continue to support this organization and everything that it represents.

I discovered this group through The Dodo daily online newsletter (which I also love) and am so grateful for their wonderful work. I can hardly bear to read some of these stories, but by sending just a small monthly contribution to Four Paws, I can help at least a little to support this critical cause.

Truly moved by the rescue and relief efforts to save and relocate Riku the bear. Started actively donating to animal rescue efforts including VetRanch.org (not a 501c3) and Four Paws International Inc. It is our responsibility to make sure animals are treated with compassion and get to live their lives with dignity.

I have never heard of Four Paws until I read the article in National Geographic about Khalil and Four Paws efforts in Aleppo....the strength and dedication described in that article is truly inspirational. I can only hope that a donation makes a little difference.

FOUR PAWS does a great job with informing the public about animal welfare issues, rescuing animals that do not have a voice, and combating problems AROUND THE WORLD! Three huge things! The unjust treatment of animals is not limited to any specific part of the globe and is not limited to any specific type of animal; I admire that FOUR PAWS has such a widespread impact. It's fantastic that an organization cares so deeply in the just treatment of animals and works toward expanding their outreach to different causes and getting involved in different campaigns every day, while sustaining the projects and work they are already doing. Thanks for making a difference in our world and for caring for animals!
