Programs: 2016 general program accomplishments - the iaf core program in 2016 continued to focus on emerging information policy challenges and education related to solutions for those policy challenges. To that end the iaf began work in artificial intelligence and digital impact on the life sciences. The iaf held a multi-stakeholder brainstorming session where we explored the connection between ethical assessments and the special challenges of artificial intelligence. This will lead to a full project in 2017. In digital impact on life sciences the iaf began working more closely with stan crosley, director of the clear program at indiana university. The work will emphasis digital linkages across health delivery, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and devices, such as smart phones, that track behavior and conditions. 2016 effective data protection program (edpg) - the edpg project was formed to give focus to the full range of issues related to the legal, fair and just processing of information given the growing complexity of information ecosystems. In 2016 the edpg conducted research to define a workable, outcome-focused framework to bring to policymakers, regulators and industry. As part of this objective, the project has provided concepts to support values-based public policy, explained how this policy could be implemented and defined the roles of various actors. A core element of the approach centers on enhancing accountability based data stewardship through the development and implementation of comprehensive data impact assessments (cdia). These assessments underpin the regulatory approach to the gdpr in europe as well as serve as the platform for ethical in fair data processing. The cdia approach will be further developed globally in 2017 & 2018 in partnership with the developers of public policy, regulatory approaches and industry.
2016 canada access privacy project - in 2016 the iaf received a grant from the office of the privacy commissioner of canada (opc) and received support and participation from twenty canadian organizations to develop an assessment framework for canadian organizations for thinking and acting with data in canada. The product of that collaboration was an assessment framework that would be an extension of canadian privacy impact assessments. The assessment framework was vetted with other stakeholders before it was finalized and submitted, along with a report, to the opc in march 2017. Not resolved in the 2016-2017 opc project was the issue of oversight of the canadian assessment process. The iaf has received a grant from the opc to explore that issue in 2017 and 2018.
