My relationship with the food pantry goes back almost 2 decades when Brenda and John Bell introduced the idea to a somewhat reluctant community. It was standing in line at the former "racket ball court" where I met my best friend and former board member Roseland Klein. I also met Lupie Rubio who also became a dear friend. We shared a lot of laughs as we watched the food pantry grow to a community staple! We begain the "soup supper", "Wheels for Meals" , and "Pals" (Pack a Lunch) during these early days.
When Tex Harrison took over as the director her commitiment to providing healthy meals and snacks for children raised the food pantry to yet another level. And Vickie Gibson, our current director, has once again raised bar using technology, on-line services, and a broad offering of food choices, It has been a joy to watch.

Causes: Food, Food Banks & Pantries
Mission: To alleviate hunger and promote healthy eating for Jeff Davis County, TX residents in need.
Results: 2023 Impact Report: -- 260,474 lbs distributed - including 102,480 lbs of fresh produce -- 32% of Jeff Davis County residents were food pantry clients -- 262 households enrolled (603 individuals) -- 187 school-age children enrolled in Pack-a-Lunch program that provides one lunch and one snack 365 days/year -- 67 senior citizens received an extra box of food each month -- Our service area covers 2,265 square miles. Multiple distribution locations allow us to meet clients where they leave, significantly relieving the burden of access.
Target demographics: alleviate hunger and promote healthy eating for residents in need
Direct beneficiaries per year: 262 households made up of 603 individuals. Our Pack-a-Lunch enrollment was 187 children. We served healthy snacks to 185 public school students each day.
Geographic areas served: Jeff Davis County, Texas
Programs: 1) Four bimonthly (2x/mo) food distributions each month at three locations 2) Pack-a-Lunch providing healthy brown-bag lunch ingredients to our school-age food pantry clients (PreK thru high school graduation) because our public schools have no cafeterias and do not participate in the National School Lunch Program 3) Senior Box supplemental food program for very low income people age 60 & up 4) Kids Pantry at the Jeff Davis County Library open to any child (age 0 thru high school graduation). No applications, no income restrictions, no personal info collected because we know there are kids experiencing food insecurity who are not regular food pantry clients. We are ranked #1 in school-age child poverty (age 5-17) out of 254 counties in Texas and #6 in the nation. 5) In-school snacks provide free healthy snacks to ALL students in a district where the 52% of students are economically disadvantaged. 6) Other services include unlimited fresh produce for food pantry clients, home delivery for homebound clients, and online ordering. All clients have the option of choosing their own food instead of receiving a pre-made box.
