Mission: Fondy Food Center's mission is to connect Greater Milwaukee to local, fresh food - from farm to table. Our vision is healthy farmers, healthy food, and healthy people.
Results: The Market serves an area of Milwaukee with a severe lack of access to fresh, affordable, locally grown food. To serve our customers, the Market is open 4 days a week - more than any Market in Wisconsin - and accepts cash, food stamps (SNAP/QUEST card), and WIC vouchers. Fondy is the only farmers market in Wisconsin to double the value of WIC vouchers so that WIC families can buy even more fresh produce for their families. During the past 3 years, Fondy Farmers Market has been among the top 5 farmers markets nationwide for food stamp sales.
Target demographics: Low-income residents on Milwaukee's North Side, local vendors who sell at Fondy Farmers Market, and small-scale, predominantly low-income farmers with long-term farmland leases at Fondy Farm Project (Port Washington).
Direct beneficiaries per year: Last year there were 35,000 customers visits, with 80% of them living in the 53205, 53206, and 53212 zip codes. These customers purchased produce from local farmers, many of whom are low-income, immigrant (primarily Hmong) farmers.
Geographic areas served: Milwaukee's North Side, primarily zip codes 53205, 53206, and 53212. Residents living in these neighborhoods have a severe lack of access to fresh, affordable, locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Programs: We accomplish our mission through two programs: Fondy Farmers Market, 2200 W. Fond du Lac Avenue, Milwaukee, and Fondy Farm Project, an 80-acre farm in Port Washington, WI.
