Causes: Food, Food Programs
Mission: Committed to building a hunger-free and healthy San Diego, Feeding America San Diego is devoted to feeding the hungry, advocating for a sustainable future, and educating the community.
Results: Feeding America San Diego is effectively leading the fight against hunger, distributing more than 21.5 million pounds of food within the last year. 40% is fresh produce, allowing clients and partner agencies to access high quality food that prevents disease and illness.
Geographic areas served: San Diego County
Programs: Feeding Kids: 1 in 4 children in San Diego County are at risk of hunger. Nearly half of the people served by FASD are under the age of 18. Nutritious food items are distributed directly into the hands of local students and their families through Farm2Kids, Backpack and School Pantry programs. In addition, this initiative focuses on educating families about the role of fresh fruits and vegetables in a healthy, active lifestyle. Feeding Families: FASD delivers food to neighborhoods that are high in poverty and often lack emergency food assistance, working with more than 160 partner agencies to ensure that healthy food is available to local non-profits operating food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters at minimal or no cost. In partnership with Ralph’s and Kraft, the Mobile Pantry program serves seniors and families with limited access to wholesome food due to the lack of transportation and available resources. Acting as a mobile farmer’s market, this program enables FASD to reach rural and suburban neighborhoods, from Rainbow to Jacumba to San Ysidro. Feeding Seniors: FASD serves hundreds of seniors experiencing food insecurity in the City Heights and Escondido areas though its Feeding Seniors initiative. Once a month, multiple senior living facilities receive fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, and appropriate shelf stable items to meet the needs of older adults. Feeding Forces: The Feeding Forces initiative aims to provide nutritious food to San Diego’s active duty military men and women, who struggle to put meals on the table for their families. As our newest focus area, FASD works with partner agencies to distribute as many meals as possible to military families.
