Causes: Homeless & Housing, Homeless Shelters
Mission: To transform the lives of families with children who are homeless by mobilizing a diverse community to provide shelter, education and comprehensive support.
Programs: Family promise metrowest is a community approach to family homelessness. Families initially enter shelter provided by 19 host congregations who convert their classrooms into bedrooms for our families one week at a time, 3-4 weeks a year. An additional 31 congregations and volunteers from the community assist in providing meals and supporting our families as they are embraced by a community of people who care. In 2017 we served 12 families in shelter including 18 adults and 29 children. Yet we are much more than a shelter. We believe our families can move themselves from poverty if they identify their root causes of homelessness and set realistic goals to address them. While in shelter, professional case managers work with our families to set goals addressing the root cause of their homelessness. Areas include finance; parenting; transportation; housing and health. One of our new initiatives in shelter this year was a more intensive focus on family health and the outcomes indicated the success of the program. 96% of families improved their physical and mental health by addressing outstanding health issues while in shelter; 100% of families addressed outstanding dental needs and 100% of children with identified special needs accessed essential resources while in shelter. Once goals are met, families move into their own homes in the community where they are supported through our transitional living program with case management and subsidies for 1 year. This program allows families the time and support needed to ensure long term sustainability. In 2017 we served 7 families in transitional living including 10 adults and 14 children. While there are many reasons families become homeless, one of the root causes is low wages due to limited education. Our steps to success program offers comprehensive support to families in obtaining employment and pursuing training that will bring them to a higher earning potential. Subsidies are provided for child care and transportation to address challenges while pursuing employment and further education. All families in shelter and transitional living were provided services through our steps to success program with a focus on education to maximize earning potential. 85% of 2017 tlp graduates pursued education while in shelter or tlp. 100% of 2017 shelter graduates and tlp graduates were employed. In 2017 we introduced our newest program life, (local initiative for family empowerment, a homelessness prevention program that supports families who are not yet homeless but at risk of eviction. The program provides subsidies to pay rent in arrears and advocacy with the landlord to prevent eviction. Families then commit to two years of case management including monthly trainings in a variety of life skills areas. The program was launched late in the year with the first family accepted in december 2017. With assistance for rent in arrears and support advocating with the landlord this single mom and child were able to remain in their own home, preventing homelessness. We know that motivated families can move themselves out of poverty and become self- sufficient when given guidance, encouragement and support. As a community of professional staff and trained volunteers, we are providing this essential assistance and making a difference together.
