Volunteering Oportunities

Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Fallen Horses, Inc. is an all-volunteer, nonprofit equine rescue and sanctuary. All of the daily care, rehabilitation, re-training and re-homing of each horse is done solely by volunteers & our Board of Directors. We are passionate about the welfare of our horses, for the lifetime of each horse. Partnered with several County Departments, including Animal Control, we accept abused, neglected or abandoned horses into our program. Each horses’ health, soundness and temperament is evaluated and a rehabilitation program is tailored to each horses’ needs to maximize their recovery. Once each horse has been appropriately rehabilitated our staff assesses them on the ground and under saddle to determine suitability for adoption. We also partner with County Probation and Welfare Offices in need of placement for minor offenders or people in Welfare to Work Programs. Each person becomes part of our volunteer staff and they receive training in proper care, feeding, and maintenance of horses, including riding lessons for those who have an interest in getting more involved.

Fallen Horses Ranch is an excellent organization catering to the needs of abused, abandoned, and retired race horses. They have great understanding of what the horses require and see that their needs are met.
Very good organization.

Fallen Horses is an amazing non-profit that truly does put the horses before anything else. They love all of the horses and care for them above and beyond. These group of people have allowed me to realize just how much I love horses and care for them they way they should be cared for. They take the time to explain to you the how and they way things go are done the proper way.

I've searched for many rescues and none have impacted my life like this one. Traci is an amazing true horse lover that has changed my life positively forever. This has certainly been an amazing experience. There has not been anything more satisfying than seeing a horse find a great home and life.

Coming to Fallen Horses is just simply amazing. This organization is beyond incredible. The hard work that the people put in for these beautiful animals is just beyond words I can come up with. They're so welcoming, and every day I come back, I fall in love over and over again. It's helped me when I felt my worst, and made me feel at my best. I cannot say how thankful I am to have found this organization and to be here not just to volunteer, but to love and cherish what goes on. Very family oriented, and each of the horses have their own personalities which makes it even better to come.

Fallen Horses is a fabulous non-profit that helps rescue horses to give them a better way of life. It was a privilege of mine to volunteer for such a great organization. Traci has dedicated her life to rescuing these majestic animals. Her level of commitment, compassion, and kindness is incomparable to any other. She is in it for the horses and their welfare. One can only admire her love for them. While volunteering, I helped feed and bathe the horses, which was fun. It reminded me of my days in Future Farmers of America. This was my first time being around horses and Traci made it really easy and comfortable. My experience was absolutely amazing and I plan on volunteering again.

I always enjoy sharing the story of Traci and her passion for her mission. Traci's efforts serve as an inspiration to others in many facets of life. She has created a formula for sustaining and enhancing life. Her rescue mission saves the life of a horse, but the glory of her work has just begun with each rescue. With the horse life sustained, she networks to create a community of people who will benefit from time with horse. I recommend Traci because I know, she included my family and me. Our brother Mike had the moment of a life time when he rode horseback for the first time. Mike is 47 with Downs Syndrome. Even as a non verbal, Mike's excitement of being in the stable and the ride where evident. Traci's mission touched Mike's soul. We are forever grateful.

I've been a part of this organization for the past year. I "took the Kool-aid" early once I had an opportunity to get to know Traci and David Hutmier who founded the organization. Their passion for saving horses is real and they are both dedicated to the welfare of these animals. Most of the horses we have currently in the Rescue were in jeopardy of going to auction where they would be prey for the kill-buyers, or they were in jeopardy of going directly to the kill-buyers. We've gotten to know each as an individual and the world is a much better place with them in it. We spend a good deal of time working with the horses to evaluate them for personality, ability, and personal traits so we can place them in forever homes with just the right people. From the time I started working with the organization through year end 2013, we were fortunate to place 22 horses in fabulous homes where their new owners love and respect them. Early this year we were privileged to also work with one horse who had been lost to his owner for six years. It is a wonderful story and has been published in several newspapers and magazines. Getting that old horse back to his original owner was one of the highlights of my life. Everyone in our organization felt wonderful to participate in that. Some of the other stories from our adopters have been just as great so we are making an impact not only for the horses but for the people who come in contact with them. We've been working with the San Bernardino County Probation and Welfare Departments helping people find a place to work off Community Service Hours. What we've found is that many of them take immediately to the horses whether or not they have previous experience, and many of them continue to volunteer here long after they've completed their obligations. We try to make each volunteer assignment a teaching experience and we work with them and teach them about how to properly care for a horse, even down to riding lessons if they are interested. This has been one of the most fulfilling years of my life. I couldn't be prouder of the accomplishments of Fallen Horses.

I can not say enough good things about Fallen Horses Rescue. After finding a resident of the rescue, That was previously owned and heartbreakingly separated from my fiancé, a coast to coast adoption/reunion was started. Every thing went as smoothly as possible. They assisted us in finding cross country transport as well as maticulously coordinating his needs throughout his long ride. He was loved by many at the rescue and touched so many people. We feel very privledged to have adopted him back. This miracle of reunion, a man with his first horse, was made possible only by Fallen Horses and their dedicated board members.

This is a fabulous Charity. I first met Traci at my friends house who is fostering for the rescue group. Traci's energy, love and commitment to these horses is joyus, infectious and inspiring. Her energy is undeniably genuine.

She is a no BS kind of person and tells you like it is, I have never worked with horses before and am learning so much from this group because they take the time to explain in detail what's going.

The horses and other equines are cared for with their utmost welfare in mind, and they know it. These are happy horses that have a sweet, gentleness about them. Positive energy eminates from Traci. She keeps her word and does what she says she will do.

I would recommend Fallen Horses to anyone who is willing to foster, volunteer, adopt or donate to a rescue group. They are honest and transparent and it shows in every thing they do and in the love they have for what they are doing.

I have worked as a volunteer for Fallen Horses for a little under 3 years now. I first met Traci Hutmier, the president and founder of the rescue when my mom was searching for a horse that I could lease and ride. Since then, I've made about 4 moves with them from Riverside, Lake Elsinore, and Phelan. I currently volunteer at the rescue every weekend from Friday night after school to Sunday night. I now have my very own horse, one of Traci's former rescues that I get to see every weekend. Over the years that I've volunteered at Fallen Horses, I've seen many miracles happen with some of the horses we have brought in, either straight from the racetracks, feed lots, or from people who have surrendered their horses due to the financial burden. This is an amazing rescue that truely cares about what they do and the horses they rescue.

Fallen Horses has been one of the best places I've ever volunteered for. They take in people who have never worked with horses and they train them the proper way on how to care for and ride horses. Fallen Horses truly takes a personal approach to every horse when training and evaluating then for adoption. They have truly become a second family to me and I am excelling in my new found passion. I am now Director of Marketing and I will enjoy growing with them.

First. Let me tell you that I do horse transport. So I have seen first hand what these horses have been reduced to! I met Traci when she reached out to me to help relocate. Since we met. It was kindred spirits immediately! I work with rescues so I know what they go through day to day. It's incredible the work that has to be done on a daily basis. Traci not only works her job 70 hours. Commutes for another 2 hours. Then she gets home and starts work with these special horses she is able to nurse back to being "horses" again! She educates people. She is an amazing person who in turn helps these amazing horses! If ever a rescue deserved to be helped. This one does! Have a blessed day!

I have loved horses all my life but have never owned or taken care of one. Volunteering at Fallen Horses has been a wonderful experience. Traci is extremely knowledgeable about horses and is so patient with both the horses and volunteers who are just learning how to care for them. I have seen some horses that most people would have written off, but Traci has a gift for rehabilitating them, both mentally and physically. I would not hesitate to recommend this organization to anyone looking for a horse, from beginning riders to experienced riders.

I became involved with Fallen Horses when I started taking riding lessons from Traci in 2012. She soon became more than a riding instructor; she became a great friend. Her passion for the mission of Fallen Horses infected me and when she asked me to join the Board I did not hesitate to say Yes!

I have very little practical experience with horses, but everyone who volunteers at Fallen Horses has been gracious about teaching me how to handle and ride these amazing OTTBs. These horses are the sweetest, most willing animals; part of this is the nature of the Thoroughbred, but mostly it is because of the loving care they receive from everyone at Fallen Horses.

My 29 year old horse had passed. We had a small ranch and started our search. On my way down to San Diego, a horse I had been considering had been placed. The lady referred us to Fallen Horses and we have never looked back. Traci have been most helpful to us with our OTTB that we could not hav done it with out her and her organization. She practices and teaches safe and fun riding experience for you and your rescue from her organization. Our horse Dances that we adopted from Fallen horses is one in a million. Everyone thinks he is swell when they meet him and watch him go thru his paces.... He is a love bug!!!!

I went to Fallen Horses to look around and to have a fun day with my daughters. I was in the market for a pony for my daughter. The staff there were all friendly and felt immediately like old friends. They are all well educated and it is apparent from the moment you drive onto the property that every person there is passionate and driven by their cause. While on a tour of their rescue Traci and Victoria started telling me about a sweet and GIANT thoroughbred who just hadn't found the right home yet. They let me pet him and then offered to saddle him up for me. I was so impressed by the training they had put into him, and it was obvious that they loved him very much. I went home knowing that I wanted him but I wanted to spend more time with him first. The staff at Fallen Horses let me return to spend time with Uraeus a few more times, even though I felt guilty because I was still unsure of the match. They were very tolerant and assured me that they felt just as strongly as I did about "The right fit". I had had Uraeus since October and couldn't be happier with him. I am so glad to have an organization that is so devoted to the rescue of horses.

I adopted my OTTB from Fallen Horses in July, 2013. I had a completely wonderful experience and could not give them a better recommendation. Thank goodness for people like them who care for these "throwaway" animals.

Fallen Horses, Inc. operates an equine rescue, shelter, and re-homing program in Pinon Hills, California. We are committed to rescuing off-the-track Thoroughbreds and other horses, including owner-surrendered, neglected, abused, and abandoned animals. Our goal is to rehabilitate and retrain the horses under our care and place them for adoption into appropriate homes. Fallen Horses, Inc. also conducts an on-going education program in order to educate the public concerning the requirements of horse ownership and will offer resources, including feed and veterinary assistance, to current horse owners with the goal of reducing the number of horses abused, neglected and abandoned each year. All of the organization’s activities are conducted by its board of directors and volunteers.

Our goal is to save as many horses from the possibility of slaughter as we can. Some of our horses come directly from the track when their racing careers are over, while others have been purchased at auction to keep them out of the hands of kill buyers. Some have been surrendered to us by owners who can no longer care for their horses properly and want to avoid sending them to auction. However they come into our care, they are all loved and taken care of, regardless of condition.
