Causes: Citizen Participation
Mission: Fairvote minnesota foundation promotes better democracy through improving the voting system. We provide research and education about the effects our voting system has on the quality of democracy and advocate for ranked choice voting or other systems that promote greater competition, participation, majority rule, and proportional representation.
Programs: Education -- reached an estimated 50,000 readers across the state through dozens of editorials, commentaries and letters to the editor about the need for rcv in response to our nation? S growing political dysfunction. In the wake of the divisive 2016 election, the star tribune once again editorialized in favor of rcv. Hosted national political thought leaders henrik hertzberg and larry diamond in minnesota for conversations about the critical and urgent need for electoral reform. The events drew more than 200 people.
outreach -- organizing at more than 100 caucuses and 40 party conventions, which culminated in a strong reaffirmation of rcv in the party? S ongoing platform at the june 2016 statewide convention. Signed up more than 5,000 new supporters through canvassing, party conventions, political rallies, the minnesota state fair, twin cities pride and dozens of other events across the state. Engaged more than 150 volunteers who contributed more than 600 hours of volunteer time. Sponsored the inaugural best of the wurst event in may. This signature event brought together new partners from the restaurant industry, as well as media and celebrity food critics, to educate festival-goers about rcv by sampling and ranking their favorite artisanal sausages! The gathering attracted dozens of participating restaurants and 600 twin citians. Through social media, we reached 5000 people weekly on average and had nearly 300,00 impressions on twitter. Fairvote minnesota foundation continued to build a broad coalition of state and local funders as well as organizations that are helping advance rcv. In st. Paul and st. Louis park this year, we continue to work closely with takeaction minnesota, mpirg, mn voices, the hmong american partnership, and several other community organizations.
public policy -- we also partnered closely with city election officials in minneapolis and st. Paul to prepare for the 2017 rcv elections, effectively preparing voters for the improved system and ensuring timely tabulation.
