In 2012, mayo clinic health system sites employed approximately 1,000 physicians and 14,000 allied health staff. Besides having health care facilities in 72 communities, the system includes 18 owned hospitals, six owned nursing homes, physician service agreements with two additional hospitals, and contract management agreements with an additional hospital and nursing home. In addition, the minnesota council for quality has recognized mayo clinic health system three times for its performance excellence efforts. Individual mayo clinic health system locations have also been honored for their commitment to quality, safety, service, performance and their communities. The downtown plaza owns and manages a 95 unit apartment building in red wing, minnesota, constructed especially for the elderly. Its program is designed to satisfy the needs of the elderly in housing and health care, and the organization only rents to people who are 55 and older. It is the goal of the corporation to maintain residents in the building so long as they are healthy enough to remain once they have entered the apartment building. Although not provided by the organization, residents can remain in their apartment if receiving hospice services or home health services. The organization provides support services, such as nurse visits, at no charge to assist the elderly residents maintain their independence as long as possible. Full time staff provide limited counseling, make referrals to available health and social services not provided, and operate a program to check daily to assure that each resident is alive and well. The staff interviews incoming residents to ascertain their needs and provide the information needed to seek help. Each room is equipped with a pull cord that sends a message directly to ambulance services. Congregate dining is available daily for those who want this service. The daily availability of the staff allows them to keep a watchful eye and assist with emergencies. Other recreational and social activities provided include: art appreciation classes, dances, holiday parties, picnics, weekly game nights and nightly card games. Downtown plaza also has exercise programs available, and all activities are open to all residents, their friends and family, and prospective residents; some are open to the public. Membership in the corporation or payment of an admission charge is not necessary to participate in these activities. The organization also organizes excursions offered at cost to residents and their guests. The rent paid by the residents primarily covers building and operation costs. Other services and subsidies are paid from other sources. The organization also rents space to mayo clinic health system-red wing, for sleep studies. On december 31, 2012 the downtown plaza merged into mayo clinic health system--red wing.
