Mission: The mission of The Stephens Center is to prevent child abuse and neglect while promoting healthy, non-violent families through appropriate home-visitation, parenting groups, advocacy, and community programs.
Programs: Healthy Start is a home-visitation program designed to help first-time parents and teen parents give their children a Healthy Start in life. Through weekly home-visits, Stephens Center staff members provide emotional support and help parents learn practical skills to cope with the new job of parenting. Healthy Start emphasizes a nurturing relationship between parents and child, developmental activities, immunizations, well-child check-ups, and school readiness. Screenings for developmental delays are conducted every six months so referrals for appropriate intervention can be made as soon as possible. In 2009 - 2010, the Healthy Start program made 1,651 home-visits to 304 Parents (27 of these were teenagers) and 188 children (age birth through 5) in Putnam, Overton, Jackson, and White Counties. For families successfully completing the Healthy Start program, there is a success rate of 95% or greater (no reports of abuse or neglect) at one year after end of services.
