Mission: To support and equip the poor and vulnerable people of rwanda by offering hope and opportunity through vocational training schools, providing competency in 6 trades leading to graduation in government accredited programs of carpentry, hairdressing, welding, sewing, masonry, and culinary arts.
Programs: Sponsorship and scholarship program for orphans: erm began in rwanda after the 1994 genocide to help the disproportionate number of orphans and widows who were left helpless and alone. The sponsorship program was designed to give monthly support of food and supplies for widows and school fees for orphans. While the organization has expanded greatly into vocational training programs, erm rwanda continues to provide direct financial support to 34 orphans and programs for children in the community near the campus of hope vocational training center.
hope vocational training centers: erm has two vocational training centers. The first was established in 2008 in kabuga, a town near kigali, the capital city of rwanda. This is the largest school and continues to grow in student population. Hvtc also offers an accredited sewing program in the remote village of rugendabari. Hvtc offered 2 government-certified and accredited training programs: the level 3 year-long program and the level 1 short-course program. In 2016 the school graduated 343 students in its five programs of carpentry, welding, sewing, hairdressing, and masonry, 109 graduating in level 3, and 234 graduating in level 1. Of the students in all programs, 29% are in hairdressing, 21% in welding, 19% in sewing, 18% in masonry, and 13% in carpentry. Women make up 80% of the students in the schools. The year-long level 3 tuition cost is $500 with nearly 40% of the students paying full tuition. Of the 109 level 3 students, 43 students paid full tuition, 35 students were under erm scholarship for full or part tuition, and 31 students were sponsored for full or part tuition through partnering organizations including aee, love alive, world vision, and compassion international. In addition, the school offers a 25-station computer lab for research and training. Erm partners with dotrwanda, an organization that maintains the computers and provides computer technology teachers who teach students in all programs 4 hours per week. The school also offers 2 hours per week in entrepreneur leadership training as part of its commitment to not only equip students with trade skills, but also to introduce them to the possibility of starting their own businesses.
campus construction and production program: the campus construction program serves two primary purposes: to give the students, especially students in masonry, carpentry and welding, real-world experience in construction and to provide facilities needed and appropriate to support the growing student body and training programs. The production program uses the skilled labor of its student to produce and sell goods and services to support the campus and its programs. Currently, the production program supports about 36% of total campus revenues. The campus facilities of hope vocational training center have been built over the past 8 years through our campus construction program on 1. 75 acres of land. The newest construction is a two-story building housing the new culinary kitchen and classrooms. This building will serve the campus for years to come with space for program classes, increasing student population, and additional program needs. This building joins the other buildings on campus, including the administration building and cantina, the sewing and hairdressing centers, the welding shop, the carpentry shop, and the student gathering center.
