Mission: The e. O. Wilson biodiversity foundation's mission is to foster a knowing stewardship of our world through biodiversity research and education initiatives that promote and inform worldwide preservation of our biological heritage. Programs: The half-earth project is a call to protect half of the planet's lands and oceans in order to manage sufficient habitat to reverse the species extinction crisis and ensure the long-term health of our planet. The half-earth project is: 1) driving research to better understand our world, 2) providing leadership to guide conservation efforts, and 3) engaging people everywhere to participate this global ambition. The inaugural half-earth day took place on october 23, 2017. The event was a celebration that brought together leaders in conservation, from around the world and across disciplines, to share their ideas and inspire innovative and impactful conservation efforts to achieve the goal of half-earth.
central to the half-earth project effort is the half-earth project map. By mapping the earth's species at fine-scale, and in relation to human activities, we are identifying and prioritizing the places we need to manage for conservation in order to safeguard the highest number of species. Phase i of the half-earth project mapping initiative was completed in 2017. The result has provided the foundation for further development of a spatially explicit, high-resolution, dynamic world map and decision-support tool capable of guiding place-based conservation management where this work is needed most.
biodiversity days are focused on cultivating awareness and promoting understanding as a key foundation for engagement, action and inspired care of our planet. Biodiversity days includes the keynote james m. And cathleen d. Stone distinguished lectureship in biodiversity as part of a two-day series of lectures and panel discussions. The theme for biodiversity days 2017 was half-earth.
