Mission: Engineers in action (eia) is a charitable organization providing engineering solutions to meet the needs of those located in impoverished nations. Eia facilitates project development, fundraising, and logistical support for various projects in these countries.
Programs: In 2014, engineers in action (eia) provided funding and support for projects in bolivia through our office in la paz, bolivia. The office included five bolivian engineers, an accountant, a bookkeeper, and sevaral expatriate interns. Eia works in partnership with other ngos including engineers without borders usa, rotary clubs, and others to improve access to safe water and basic infrastructure primarily in rural communities throughout bolivia. We had 21 active projects in 2014 including six new communities, five projects in the design phase, and ten projects in the construction phase. In addition, six projects were completed and entered into the monitoring phase in 2014. We developed and implemented a new, asset-based community selection process in order to improve the success rate of and sustainability of future eia projects. We also continued to work more closely with municipalities to identify the communities in greatest need in order to help extend services to the unserved. In addition, we continued to work closely with rotary clubs, bolivian national agencies, and universities in bolivia and the united states to address acid mine runoff issues in the potosi area. This work included development of active and passive treatment designs and indentification of alternative water sources in affected communities.
