Mission: Ehl leads the way toward a better future for southern california through the creation of secure intact native landscapes where diverse, abundant wildlife thrives, by building sustainable human communities with a high quality of life for everyone, and by protecting rural and agricultural lands from being overrun by urban sprawl.
Programs: Since its start in 1991, the endangered habitats league has provided environmental participation and community outreach for californias natural communities conservation plan and other land planning programs. Activities include participation in local and state advisory groups, review and analysis of technical documents, participation in legal proceedings, comment preparation and/or initiation of relevant scientific studies. In 2016, ehl worked to maintain the integrity of riverside and san diego county general and multiple species conservation plans, and on reaching an agreement with the orange county transportation corridor agency on future tollroad locations. Ehl serves on the board of directors of the tejon ranch conservancy and on important land protection advisory committees for san diego and orange counties, in the latter directing measure m open space funding to create critical low elevation connectivity between nccp regions. In san bernardino county, in 2017, ehl continued its work to preserve one of the last places with habitat for the endangered san bernardino kangaroo rat.
ehl takes an active role in cross-border protection of habitats common to baja california and southern california. Ehl partners with terra peninsular, an ensenada-based non-profit which protects habitat in baja california through land purchases and conservation agreements with land owners. In 2007 and again in 2012, ehl assisted with important transactions that protected key coastal properties. In 2017, ehl continued assistance for the stewardship of these lands and the undertaking of supporting scientific studies, as well as handling some us costs for consultants. In 2017, ehl also supported the establishment of jardin botanico, which protects and manages vernal pools for educational and research purposes.
in 2006, ehl established the endangered habitats conservancy for the purpose of holding land and conservation easements and managing them for their habitat values. The conservancy has undertaken extensive habitat restoration programs along the san diego river and elsewhere, primarily in san diego county. In 2007, the first acquisition of 314 acres of coastal sage scrub habitat was completed, forming a southern extension of the crestridge ecological preserve. Work continued on acquisition of a two-mile stretch of river basin for habitat restoration and park uses with additional purchases in 2008 and 2009 for a cumulative investment of more than 10,000,000. In 2013, ehl completed the transfer of ownership and management of these lands to ehc. Ehl continues to facilitate the purchase of additional conservation property. In 2017, with the aid of funding from ehl, a research scientist carried out field assessments for ehc. .
