Mission: For over 25 years, ENACT’s mission has been to teach social, emotional and behavioral skills through a unique, interactive combination of theatre, drama therapy, group counseling and inquiry-based learning techniques. ENACT annually works with over 50 public schools throughout all 5 boroughs of NYC with a focus on high-poverty areas in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens, as well as in long-term suspension centers. To date, our programs have served over 125,000 students, school staff, and parents through in-school partnerships, parent and staff workshops, after-school programming, and auditorium performances. Our goal is to empower students to take responsibility for their own learning and find positive alternatives to the behaviors that stand in the way of success. ENACT is recognized as an organization that focuses on dropout prevention, violence prevention, student engagement, and attendance improvement. ENACT’s extensive experience with group dynamics and behavior management leads us to energize classrooms, turning them into safe spaces where students who were previously unwilling to participate become active learners. They respond because the scenes and games are highly engaging and interactive and we have professional actors showcase our curriculum. Intensive training and supervision by licensed clinicians assure that the programs delivered are safe and supportive, and that students do not feel exposed or vulnerable. ENACT helps to reduce the stigma that surrounds self-expression and can create a bridge to counseling and other community resources as needed.
Results: Specific outcomes for ENACT programs include: • Improved attendance and class participation • Reduced bullying • Better communication skills with school staff and family members • A greater degree of self-confidence and the ability to make better choices in everyday life During the 2013-14 school year, at MS 363, 93% of ENACT students attended in-school ENACT groups, while the school’s overall attendance rate was 87.5%. At High School of Hospitality Management (HSHM), 55% of ENACT’s cohort improved their attendance and 37% had over 90% attendance for 2014. Regular evaluation of programs indicates students display significant improvement in social emotional learning and that ENACT has a positive impact on the entire school community.
