Mission: The eleanor roosevelt center inspires and empowers individuals and organizations to use their time, talent, and resources to build a just and sustainable world, close to home and abroad, by providing programs and experiences epitomizing eleanor roosevelt's passion and commitment to human rights, principled leadership, engaged citizenship, and social justice for all.
Programs: The girls leadership workshop was developed in response to a need, emphasized at the 1995 beijing world conference on women, for additional resources for girls to develop the self-esteem, confidence, and skills needed to exercise leadership as socially engaged adults. In 1996, a sub-committee of the board of the erlc formed to design a leadership program for high school girls. Today, over 1,188 girls have graduated from the girls leadership workshop. The glw encourages and enables girls to live the life described by eleanor roosevelt as "brave, exciting, and imaginative. " in 2016, 60 girls attended two sessions of the workshop program.
the eleanor roosevelt at val-kill medal awards recognize and honor individuals who make a significant contribution to society in the arts, education, citizenship, philanthropy, community services, and other humanitarian concerns that reflect mrs. Roosevelt's ideals. The ceremony recognizes those who live their lives in the spirit of mrs. Roosevelt and serve as role models for the larger community, setting a standard for community values. The medal ceremony is an opportunity and a teachable moment to bring to life what mrs. Roosevelt accomplished through the actions and deeds of all of our outstanding medalists.
the eleanor roosevelt community college for emerging leaders (eccel) was developed in 2012. It is a two-year leadership development program for dutchess, orange, rockland, and ulster county community college students that is designed to prepare them to lead in all aspects of their lives - personal, academic, professional, and community. Ervk welcomed the first cohort of 29 students (11 men and 18 women) in october 2013, plus 30 more in october of 2014. The first year of the program focused on leadership development and self-discovery through a series of three weekend retreats, on-campus workshops, and s service-learning project. Year two of the program is designed to help students acheive personal and career goals through the creation and implementation of personal and professional development plans. In 2016, 10 men and 26 women participated in the eccel program.
