Mission: Provide educational and safety, afterschool tutoring, computer classes, housing and employment services
Programs: Core programming: our office provided referrals to safety net services, including housing & job listings, and other community resources to an average of 40-70 individuals, who came to the center each day. The food bank for westchesters mobile pantry provided 67,000 lbs. Of food to an average of 472 individuals 2 times per month. Our annual health fair, a collaboration with thomas slater center and white plains hospital, was attended by 305 individuals. Altogether, in 2016 we provided over 16,000 services to thousands of individuals from white plains and communities all over westchester and the surrounding region.
youth education & enrichment programming. We served k-12 students. K & 1st graders with early literacy instruction, 2nd & 3rd graders at our summer literacy academy, 4th & 5th graders on saturdays in our computer lab with culture through technology and study skills. In our unique mi hermana mayor and mi hermano mayor programs, 6th graders receive tutoring and mentoring support from college and high school-age older sisters and older brothers. On-site tutoring at the white plains high school helps newly arrived teens adjust and work towards completion of their studies. Saturday academy, a collaboration with archbishop stepinac high school, white plains, new york provides tutoring and support for 7th graders to high school in the stepinac computer lab.
computer classes for adults. We provided computer classes for adult learners, who were instructed in three increasingly advanced levels of microsoft office software. This year we added a fourth class on ms access. Each class meets in the evening or on saturdays for 64 class hours over a 16-week semester, resulting in a completion certificate. These classes allow adults to qualify for better-paying jobs or help them run their own businesses. Even our most basic course gives job seekers the computer and internet skills necessary to apply for jobs on- line, and help parents assist children with computer-based homework and access the white plains schools website for assignments and teacher communications.
