I've rescued hens from Hen Harbor in the past and made donations. I love rescue chickens. They really appreciate experiencing a good life after living in a commercial egg factory. I have a beautiful set up in Scotts Valley and my hens are treated very well.
Today, I wanted to rescue a few more hens and when I asked about their health assessment process, particularly pertaining to the bird flu they described their process. Then, they told be to BUY my chickens from the Scotts Valley Feed Story or directedly from the hatteries. I'm unsure why they said this. I'm guessing it had something to do with asking about their health protocols. It's very sad to me that they are so sensitive that they would go against their own values regarding animal welfare (adopt not shop) because of a basic question. Hen Harbor has a lot of hens and they should be more proactive about adopting them out.
Beginning in 2017 Hen Harbor went sharply downhill. I used to work with her since 2015 regularly and there was a huge change in her demeanor and how she acted with her animals.
She began harming animals in her care on a regular basis and trying to actively kill predators such as bobcats that would kill her birds (she lets them free roam each day and they are always vulnerable to predators).
Rather than make a predator-safe environment, she tries to poison bobcats and hawks and violently punches and throws roosters if they try to mate with a hen.
I support Hen Harbor and Ariana's work with all my heart, I trust her 101% !
She is amazing and her work is amazing. She puts so much soul, passion and hard work in what she does and fights for each and every individual.
Don't hesitate to offer your support and help the birds in need !

Always love going to Hen Harbor. It's a joy to see a variety of rescued animals springing back to life, regaining their trust for humans and even developing some egos. Says a lot for the love and care they receive from the relentless Ariana. Thank you Hen Harbor for teaching us to find our love for all animals, again.
This sanctuary, in the Santa Cruz mountains, cares for hens rescued from the animal agriculture industry, and other animals. They do great work, with very limited financial resources.
I am not a financial analyst, but I can safely say that Hen Harbor cares for more animals per dollar than any of the bigger more well publicized sanctuaries.
I feel good about volunteering and donating to this humble sanctuary.
Hen Harbor is a beautiful animal sanctuary that gives safe harbor to more than just hens. I cherish each moment that I have been there, from meeting my first chicken, to helping orphaned oppossums, rescued ducks, geese, turkeys, and even a peacock. Each being is given the best care possible, from food to veterinary care.
