Mission: East bay bicycle coalition dba bike east bay promotes healthy, sustainable communities by making bicycling safe, fun and accessible.
Programs: With the alameda county transportation commission, city of oakland, kaiser permanente, and other funders, the east bay bicycle coalition dba bike east bay offers a wide variety of bicycle education programs throughout alameda county and contra costa county. These programs include urban cycling 101 classes for adults and teens, adult learn-to-ride-a-bike classes, family cycling workshops, kids bike rodeos, bicycle theft prevention, and commuter basics workshops. In 2017, we educated 3,536 adults and children on safe and responsible bicycling through our free bicycle skills classes. This includes 150 adults who learned to ride a bike for the first time through our learn-to-ride class. Our instructor pool increased in diversity, with 78% of classes taught by a woman and/or person of color.
bike east bay's advocacy work resulted in key wins for east bay bicyclists in 2017. Our grassroots efforts paid off with better bikeways throughout alameda and contra costa counties and funding secured for ambitious projects in years to come. Successes in 2017 include: protected bikeways completed on bancroft way in berkeley for a total of ten protected bikeways in seven cities, a protected intersection on the iron horse trail in pleasanton, and winning and connecting low income people with heavily discounted bike share membership.
bike east bay coordinated the 22nd annual bike to work day in alameda and contra costa counties in 2017. On may 11th, 140 energizer stations were set up and counted 21,300 participating bicyclists throughout the east bay. Bike to work day continues to be one of bike east bay's biggest events, now with accompanying events and highlights such as bike to school day, a bike blessing, a psa campaign, bike happy hours and more - thanks to continued partnerships with the metropolitan transportation commission, alameda county transportation commission, contra costa 511, safe routes to school and many other sponsors.
