Mission: Earth conservancy is a nonprofit organization committed to the reclamation and return of over 16,000 acres of former coal company-owned land to the region. It collaborates with local communities, government agencies, education institutions, and the private sector to spearhead the creation and implementation of plans that restore the lands economic, recreational, residential, and ecological value.
Programs: Earth conservancys primary work is reclamation of legacy mine lands. Ec believes that reclamation can bring about environmental restoration, as well as economic revitalization. In the last 20 years, ec has reclaimed over 2,000 acres of mine-scarred land. In total, over 8,0000 acres of ec's original land holdings have been divested and are now in productive use.
earth conservancy operates a large-scale leaf and yard waste compost facility in newport township, luzerne county. Established in 1995, the facility accepts organic material from county municipalities and residents, which is turned into compost. Compost is available for purchase by residents and landscapers, and ec regularly donates material to municipalities, nonprofits, and other community organizations. Ec also uses compost on its reclamation projects.
the maelstrom oxidizer mitigates acid mine drainage being discharged into the nanticoke creek from two boreholes in hanover township. The system, through the addition of oxygen, increases precipitation of iron particles from the contaminated water. This results in a reduction of chemical and sediment output into the nanticoke creek and, consequently, the receiving waters of the susquehanna river and chesapeake bay.
earth conservancy also provides recreational facilities for the community as well as a garden where residents can grow their own produce. Costs relative to these programs are also included in these expenses.
