Causes: Economic Development, Urban & Community Economic Development
Mission: Plan and coordinate public and private development in downtown kalamazoo to assure that the downtown area is able to support retail, commercial, and residential activity in the interest of maintaining the central business district as the core of the community. The exempt purpose of the organization includes lessening the burden of the city of kalamazoo government by providing staffing services for the downtown development authority and operating the parking structures owned and built by the city of kalamazoo for the benefit of the public. The organization exists to create a sense of place for a diverse community by supporting and sponsoring events, activities and public spaces which are fun, safe and welcoming to all with a focus on families, youth and education.
Programs: In coordination with other related entities the organization has implemented new rehabilitation projects in the downtown kalamazoo area to improve the health, living, and working conditions in the downtown district. Fund and administer musical and visual arts in which local diverse groups showcase their cultures through music, dance, and food, the annual holiday parade, and informational programs dealing with public safety concerns in the city of kalamazoo.
