Mission: In all of our development activities, our aim is to equip and empower individuals, families and communities for positive social and economic transformation through reproducible initiatives that prioritize local participation, resources and cultural strengths. Our overarching goal is to empower individuals, families and communities to break the cycle of poverty. Two key ways we do this are through building hope (helping people see there is a way out) and building trust (ensuring support for those seeking a better future).
Programs: Community development programs: in 2017 doulos continued our community development programs in the islamic republic of mauritania but these programs have been significantly scaled down due to factors outlined in last year's report. 2017 has seen the wind-down of some of our larger programs, but programs continuing in 2017 and into 2018 include support for a school in an under-served community, support for a literacy center in a rural village, small-scale job-creation projects, providing expert advice to indigenous mauritanian ngos, and other small projects.
interfaith dialogue programs and research: in 2017 doulos continued and expanded our work in promoting muslim-christian and muslim-christian-jewish understanding and reconciliation in various nations around the world. Notable activities in this area in 2017 included participation in the summit meeting between the grand imam of al-azhar and pope francis, participation in muslim-christian dialogue in a refugee camp in algeria, ongoing quiet work with muslim and jewish leaders around the world, public speaking at christian conferences on islam, and scholarly research and publication in support of these efforts.
